Gary David Goldberg, the TV writer/producer behind "Family Ties" died June 23. He had been suffering from brain cancer. He was 68. The Brooklyn-born Goldberg took a long and winding road to Hollywood, where he began his scriptwriting career on "The Bob Newhart Show," "The Tony Randall Show" and "The Last Resort." He won an Emmy for his writing on "Lou Grant." Goldberg and Family Ties alumni Michael J. Fox reteamed years later for "Spin City." Fox credited Goldberg with making him a star.
